The young defender joins Middlesbrough from Arsenal.
Arsenal defender Calum Chambers has today joined newly-promoted Middlesbrough on a season-long loan.
The move will enable Chambers to have first-team experience and develop as a defender. Arsene Wenger has already signed Rob Holding and Shkodran Mustafi this season. It’s highly unlikely that the 21-year old would have featured much in the Gunners’ first team this year.
Chambers scored in the Gunners opening day defeat against Liverpool
The defender did feature in Arsenal’s opening defeat against Liverpool, The England international even got on the score sheet. Despite this, new signings Holding and Mustafi are ahead of Chambers in Wenger’s starting Xl.
Chambers has struggled to break into Arsenal’s first-team since joining the Gunners two years ago from Southampton for £16 million.
West Ham, Hull, Watford and Roma all took an interest in Chambers, but the defender favoured new boys Middlesbrough.
The loan move should benefit Chambers, first-team football is what the defender needs to progress and develop as a player. The signing for Boro seems like a smart deal for the newly promoted side. Boro will be aiming to carry on their successful start to the season by remaining in the top diversion.
Middlesbrough have so far had a great start to the season and have settled well into the Premier League. Boro are unbeaten in the league, taking five points from nine.
