Serbia and the Republic of Ireland played out a 2-2 draw in their first qualifying match for the 2018 World Cup on Monday evening, and Newcastle United fans will have been paying close attention given the presence of two of their strikers.

Aleksandar Mitrovic started for Serbia while the Magpies’ recent addition Daryl Murphy came off the bench to score a late equaliser.

It was good news for the Ireland man but it was an evening to forget for Mitrovic, who had little impact before being substituted shortly before the hour mark.

The 21-year-old arrived at Newcastle last summer with a big reputation having found the net regularly for previous clubs Partizan Belgrade and Anderlecht.

However, he managed just nine goals for the Magpies in his first campaign and a red card at the end of last season meant he was suspended for the start of Newcastle’s Championship stint.
