Tottenham’s Eric Dier will captain England this evening.

England have announced Eric Dier is set to to captain the Three Lions this evening for the team’s friendly with Germany.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has already earned 21 caps for England, an impressive figure considering he is still just 23-years-old.

Dier becomes the sixth player to captain England under Gareth Southgate, following Tottenham teammate Harry Kane who will miss the clash through injury.

Southgate told The FA’s official website: “Eric is an established player in the side now. He plays with maturity and intelligence. He understands the game really well. He is also a great role model.”

England will play a relatively inexperienced side this evening, with Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek expected to make their international debuts.

Tottenham fans have reacted proudly to the news Dier will captain England, and it is another healthy bit of recognition for the work being undertaken by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

While Tottenham fans are thrilled with Dier’s progress, fans of rival clubs are not so impressed with the announcement.

Dier is still an inexperienced player in comparison to past England captains and him being handed the armband is being viewed as a sign the national team is not in as good shape as it may seem.
