Defensive side of Everton ace Bernard’s game shown up against Watford.

Everton substituted Bernard last night quickly after conceding two goals against Watford. It was no coincidence.
The Brazilian attacker was little help defensively as his teammates blundered their way to concede twice.
Perhaps it was harsh of Marco Silva to sacrifice Bernard when others were just as culpable, but the manager clearly felt he needed a player who could give the team better balance.
Bernard had managed just 28 touches in 65 minutes before coming off, offering little at either end of the pitch.
After a very promising performance in the Merseyside derby, this was a step backwards for the summer signing.

This was Bernard’s eighth start for Everton in the Premier League, and his early substitution prompts questions whether he will retain his place for the Toffees’ next fixture.
Everton signed him for his attacking ability. When he is finding it tough to contribute offensively, his defensive culpability is highlighted.
He will have to do more if he is going to become a star in the Premier League.
