Tottenham have are reportedly interested in Barcelona playmaker Andre Gomes.

Portugal's midfielder Andre Gomes stands prior to the international friendly football match between Portugal and Netherlands at Stade de Geneve stadium in Geneva on March 26, 2018.

Italian outlet CalcioMercato have claimed that Tottenham are in pole position to sign Barcelona playmaker Andre Gomes after the Portuguese star changed his agent – but fans have urged the north London club to look elsewhere.

The 24-year-old has been a long-standing target for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, after Gomes joined Barcelona from La Liga rivals Valencia in the summer of 2016.

Identified as a long-term replacement for both Xavi and Andres Iniesta, Gomes has failed to produce the kind of form that saw Barcelona land the 29-time international in the first place for £31million.

Andre Gomes of FC Barcelona duels for the ball with Isaac Success of Malaga during the La Liga match between Malaga and Barcelona at Estadio La Rosaleda on March 10, 2018 in Malaga, spain.

This season he has been afforded only 16 La Liga appearances, 10 of which have been from the substitutes’ bench. Now, it is believed that the midfielder has changed his agent in a move that puts Spurs in pole position.

That is because he has linked up with Paul Martin, who remains the representative of Ross Barkley and John Stones and orchestrated the duo’s moves from Everton to Chelsea and Manchester City respectively.

Previously, Gomes was with Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes, who has close ties with interested duo Juventus and AC Milan. But his decision to choose Martin gives Spurs the upper hand.

However, fans have pleaded with their club to look elsewhere than Gomes this summer. One fan stated that Gomes is “a really poor player” and will “give up” if the club sign him.
