There was delight for Republic of Ireland’s U19s side on Sunday after Celtic’s Barry Coffey scored a goal to send them into the semi-finals of the U19 European Championship.

With a win needed to ensure they weren’t relying on results elsewhere, Coffey netted nine minutes from time to secure a 2-1 victory over Czech Republic and a second place finish in Group B of the competition.

They will now go on to play Portugal on Wednesday, with Spain and France battling it out for the other final spot.

Coffey arrived at Celtic as a 16-year-old back in 2017, with The Daily Record then reporting that they had beaten giants such as Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea to his signature.

Testing himself against the best young talent in Europe will be a great experience for the midfielder ahead of what will be an important season for him.

Now 18, he’s at an age where transition to the first-team could be on the cards if enough progress is shown.

He was included in the Hoops’ trip to Austria in pre-season and even featured in a friendly against SC Pinkafeld.
