The Aston Villa midfielder came on in the 93rd minute of Ireland’s game against Denmark.
Conor Hourihane has been in fantastic form for Aston Villa this season, but the midfielder was only named on the bench for the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup play-off against Denmark on Saturday, finally called on with 93 minutes on the clock.
While Martin O’Neill’s side kept the Danes at bay to secure a valuable 0-0 draw away from home, Villa fans would have been forgiven for wondering what their players needed to do to get on the field.
After all, Hourihane had no time to make his mark and fellow midfielder Glenn Whelan did not do much better, getting a run-out with just two minutes of normal-time remaining.
There is still another 90 minutes to play and the Villa players could still make their mark, with Scott Hogan an unused substitute in the first leg, but there were questions to be asked over some of those who did start in place of their better performing teammates.
Hourihane has featured 16 times for Villa this season in all competitions, scoring five goals to average a strike every three Championship matches.
A strike this weekend would hae come in very handy, but it was not to be, leaving the Villa man to wonder if he will get more of a chance to impress in the return clash.
