England Under-21’s fell to defeat again on Sunday night, losing 2-0 to Portugal in their second European Championship group stage game.

Aidy Boothroyd’s side lost 1-0 to Switzerland in their first game, and knew nothing less than a win would be good enough against Portugal.

However, they fell flat again, with Danny Mota placing the opener past Aaron Ramsdale with the aid of the post.

Francisco Trincao hammered home a penalty to make it 2-0, and that effectively ends England’s hopes of getting out of the group stage.

There really wasn’t much for England fans to shout about last night, but the performance of Ben Godfrey was a shining light.

The Everton defender made one superb goal-line block in the opening stages before throwing himself in where it hurts to keep Portugal at bay.

Signed from Norwich City for £25million back in October, Godfrey has quickly become an Everton fan favourite having impressed throughout the season.

Fans on Twitter have now been flocking to rave about Godfrey, suggesting that he is a ‘serious talent’ and showed ‘scary’ athleticism against Portugal.

Others think that playing Under-21 football is simply disrespectful to Godfrey, tipping him to be in the senior side this summer having been ‘sensational’ last night.
