It would have been easy to feel sorry for Steven Bergwijn earlier this week.
The £25m Dutch winger was probably minding his own business, thinking about just why he hasn’t been utilised much of late.
Then, Alisson went and scored for Liverpool. The Brazilian goalkeeper headed home a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner to give Liverpool all three points at West Brom.
That sparked fans into life, comparing Alisson’s goalscoring record against outfield players – and Bergwijn became the source of jokes.
Spurs fans noted that Alisson’s goal meant that he was outscoring Bergwijn this season, having a bit of light-hearted fun over the wide man’s frustrating season.
Bergwijn was given a start against Aston Villa on Wednesday, and took just eight minutes to hit back against the jokes about him.
He smashed a stunning strike into the top corner of the Villa net, and was Tottenham’s most dangerous player throughout, registering three shots on target, three successful dribbles and two key passes.
Bergwijn offered much more than both Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, and has now shown that he can make a real impact going forward rather than just being a name to poke fun at after Alisson’s goal.
Sadly, Bergwijn’s goal didn’t lead to a Tottenham win. He at least showed what he is all about, and maybe he can bag another goal on the final day of the season, ending the campaign ahead of Alisson after all!
