Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld endured a hugely disappointing evening as Belgium suffered a heavy defeat.

A number of fans have taken to Twitter to slam Spurs star Toby Alderweireld’s performance during Belgium’s surprise defeat to Switzerland in their Nations League clash at the weekend.
The Tottenham ace was picked alongside Dedryck Boyata and Vincent Kompany at the heart of Roberto Martinez’s side’s defence for the game that looked set to decide who would be heading to Portugal next summer.
And it appeared that Belgium were going to cruise into the last four of the competition as Thorgan Hazard gave the World Cup semi-finalists a 2-0 lead inside 17 minutes.
But Switzerland turned the game on its head, scoring five times to claim a famous win. And the defeat led to Alderweireld coming in for a lot of criticism from various supporters on social media.

Several Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter to urge their club not to make a move for the centre-back off the back of the performance. The London Evening Standard recently reported that Jose Mourinho was eyeing a cut-price deal for the former Southampton loanee amid his continuing contract uncertainty at Tottenham.
But after Belgium’s defeat, it appears that many United fans are keen to see their side scrap their plans to make a bid for the Spurs star – and they were not the only ones criticising Alderweireld.

Here is some of the reaction to his display in the 5-2 defeat…
