Leeds United lost to Derby County earlier this week despite going ahead.
With time running out at Elland Road, and Leeds United 1-0 up, it looked like the Whites were set for a much needed victory. Yet when the full-time whistle blew the hosts had contrived to turn a narrow victory into a late defeat and that poses serious questions about Thomas Christiansen’s squad.
Teams with a serious chance of promotion need to see out tough games, more so at home, and yet a gamble the gamble on inexperienced players appears to be affecting them just when they need a more positive run of form.
This team needs a Kyle Bartley or a Liam Bridcutt; a player with the experience and tenacity needed to see their side through the final vital minutes of close matches.
There should be leaders in this Leeds side but even Pontus Jansson and – to a lesser extent – Luke Ayling have under-performed this season and Leeds are relying too much on players with no previous experience of the tough Championship arena.
Picking Stuart Dallas from the start was a step in the right direction, as was the recent re-call for Ronaldo Vieira, but Leeds are still lacking the experience in key areas that would ensure 1-0 leads with just 18 minutes remaining are not quickly and alarmingly turned on their head.
Leeds have time to get things right, and there are plenty of reasons to be positive, but the influx of new additions has not, for the most part, paid off thus far.
