Rangers appear to be closing in on making Steven Gerrard their new boss.

Steven Gerrard of BT Sport looks on during the Emirates FA Cup Final between Arsenal and Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on May 27, 2017 in London, England.

Rangers today saw Graeme Murty depart as manager, and whilst he may still return as youth team boss, the attention now turns to finding a permanent manager.

Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson will take charge until the end of the season, but with Murty’s interim spell over – having been charge since Pedro Caixinha’s exit in October – it’s now full steam ahead for a new boss.

The hot name over the last week has been that of Steven Gerrard, with the Liverpool legend and current Reds Under-18 boss strongly touted for the job.

The 37-year-old has no managerial experience but may bring a big-game mentality to the club, as well as some huge signings who want to work with the England international.

Rangers fans are seen during the Scottish Cup Quarter final match between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox Stadium on March 4, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Reports from the Daily Star earlier today suggested that Gerrard was set to sign a three-year deal at Ibrox having been promised significant transfer funds, though that seems a little premature right now.

Gerrard was on BT Sport earlier tonight, covering the Real Madrid v Bayern Munich Champions League clash, and he was naturally asked about the Rangers rumours.

Gerrard, as seen on BT Sport’s clip on their Twitter account, confirmed that talks have taken place and more will come on Thursday, noting that ‘we will see’ whether he will end up in the Ibrox dugout.

Rangers fans naturally took to Twitter to react, suggesting that his face said it all and that he will ‘definitely’ be the next Gers boss, with some predicting his appointment on Friday after his comments tonight.
