According to Fabrizio Romano, West Ham made a late move to sign Tyrell Malacia, who is now close to joining Manchester United.

What’s the story?

Well, the 22-year-old seemed destined to join Lyon after a £12m deal was agreed.

However, as they closed in on a deal for Frenkie de Jong – who shares the same agent as Malacia – Manchester United must’ve been offered the chance to sign the left-back, as Erik ten Hag hijacked the signing.

That was a blow for Newcastle, who were keen to sign the Dutchman, but Romano interestingly added that West Ham also made a late attempt to steal the Netherlands international from under Lyon’s nose.

David Moyes is clearly on the hunt to find competition for Aaron Cresswell, but unless Malacia himself decides to snug Ten Hag in favour of the Hammers, it seems the east Londoners will now have to look elsewhere.

The Feyenoord defender made a whopping 50 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring one goal while also providing five assists as the Dutch side reached the UEFA Conference League final.

Thankfully, it seems Moyes hasn’t put all of his eggs into one basket.

With a move for Malacia now out of the equation, West Ham could turn their attention to Aaron Hickey, with the Scottish left-back believed to be a target for the Irons.

However, the Hammers face competition from Arsenal for the Bologna star’s signature.

If the Gunners win that race, West Ham are also interested in signing VfL Stuttgart left-back Borna Sosa, so Moyes clearly has a number of options to pursue.

David Raum, a Germany international, is another name believed to be on the shortlist.

Be sure to keep an eye on West Ham, as we’d be very surprised if they didn’t sign a new left-back.
