Fabrizio Romano has tipped Liverpool to increase their interest in PSV Eindhoven superstar Cody Gakpo despite Manchester United being the favourites to sign the Dutch international in January.

Speaking to CaughtOffside, the Italian journalist hinted that Liverpool could soon intensify their efforts to sign Gakpo, who has been one of the breakout stars at the 2022 FIFA World Cup with the 23-year-old scoring in every single game for the Netherlands during the group stages.

As a result, interest has magnified greatly for Gakpo in the past few weeks. However, it appears that Liverpool’s Premier League rivals United remain the favourites to sign the PSV superstar, though Voetbal Primeur report that the winger could now cost as much as €80m (£70m) in January.

Such price increases are normal following a World Cup. But with Gakpo already having a sensational year with PSV at club-level, the likes of Liverpool and United would have had to break the bank originally to lure the forward away from Eindhoven in 2023.

Indeed, the race to sign Gakpo is heating up. And for Romano, Jurgen Klopp’s side could increase their interest in their attempt to sign Holland’s newest superstar attacker, with the journalist also saying that the Reds have sent scouts to watch the PSV talisman.

Romano said: “Liverpool have sent their scouts to PSV games to monitor Gakpo, they did the same with Kudus for example; it’s a normal kind of interest but there is still no meeting scheduled between agents and Liverpool as of today. For sure, with this kind of super performances, interest is growing.”

One could argue that attack is the last of Liverpool’s problems, with the Reds going big on Darwin Nunez in the summer and the likes of Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz firing on all cylinders this season. However, any chance to beat United in the market is a chance worth taking, especially with a player like Gakpo involved.

After all, the Dutch attacker has proved this World Cup that he is a phenomenal talent with the potential to become one of the best in the global game. And for Liverpool, signing such a player and getting one over on United will be a win-win for many supporters.
