Fabrizio Romano has taken to Twitter to share a positive transfer update for Newcastle fans regarding Andrey Santos.

Newcastle well placed to sign Andrey Santos

Well, according to the reliable Italian journalist, Newcastle have a good relationship with the representatives of the 18-year-old, who also work for Bruno Guimaraes.

Romano believes the Magpies have been monitoring Santos for a while now, although they will have to pay over €30m (£26m) if they want to sign the teenager.

It comes after iNews claimed that Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi are planning to tap into the South American market as they aim to bring the best prospects from that part of the planet to Tyneside.

Santos has made 32 appearances in all competitions for Vasco da Gama this season, impressively scoring seven goals from defensive midfield.

Forget the goals for a moment – Santos plays 90 minutes on a regular basis for a senior side, and their results have been strong, which says a lot about his maturity.

Of course, a £26m deal is pricey for a teenager, although Newcastle certainly have the wealth to make it happen if they think he’ll be worth it.

Andrey Santos represents Newcastle growth

Just over 12 months ago, Newcastle fans would have been more than grateful – if not a tad shocked – to see £26m spent on a young player under the guidance of Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce.

Now, the Magpies are prepared to pay that amount for a player who presumably wouldn’t even become a first-team regular immediately, which speaks volumes about how much the club has grown.

Ashley severely neglected the youth setup at Newcastle, but Staveley and Ghodoussi would be showing serious intent in regards to their long-term ambitions at St James’ Park if they invested such a huge amount into a teenager.

If Santos even ends up being half as good as Bruno Guimaraes, then it is a deal worth doing for Newcastle.
