Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that West Ham made a late loan bid for Cagliari striker Giovanni Simeone.

The Hammers had been credited with an interest in Simeone last month, and it has now come to light that they actually made a late offer to try and bring him in on loan.

Unfortuantely, as we all know, they were unable to bring a forward in, and their offer for Simeone was rejected.

“They were trying for a lot of strikers, because it’s a part of football trying for different ones. Obviously in January too in this difficult is normal to speak to many agents and clubs and everything,” Romano said about West Ham.

“We have to mention, as David Ornstein said many times, En-Nesyri was the main option, but for Sevilla it was impossible. Sevilla, as always don’t sell their players in January only in summer.

“But another option for West ham was Giovanni Simeone, he’s playing for Cagliari, he’s not having a good season, I have to be honest for Cagliari.

“There was a possibility, West Ham were asking his agent and trying to find a possibility, they were offering a loan with a buy option, it was a straight loan with a €1m as the loan fee, but Cagliari immediately said no because he’s the starter at Cagliari.”

This is certainly an interesting development.

The striker position was one that West Ham needed to bolster after selling Sebastien Haller, and it seems as though they did try to get one through the door.

Unfortunately, January is a tricky window, and it’s hard to convince any team to part ways with their €16m (£14m) starting striker midway through a season.

West Ham will now have to wait until the summer to fix their lack of depth up top.
