Fabrizio Romano has told his Here We Go podcast that Tottenham are still looking at Villarreal defender Pau Torres. The Spain international openly admitted to rejecting a £50million move to Spurs, in the summer of 2021.
Torres, 24, has been a revelation since joining Villarreal from Malaga in the summer of 2021. In less than four seasons, the 16-time Spain star has already clocked up 116 outings for Unai Emery’s side. He is first choice.
Speaking to the Guardian in November, Torres was asked about a move to Tottenham in the summer – with Fabio Paratici pushing hard to get him. An offer of £50million was made, as per the report, and a huge wage.
But Torres chose to remain at Villarreal – with the Yellow Submarine competing in the Champions League. Now, Romano tells his podcast that Spurs remain intent on signing Torres – but Villarreal do not want to sell.
“Let’s see what happens with a centre-back. Tottenham want to sign a new centre-back in January. Pau Torres has always been on their list since last summer, but Villarreal have no intention to let him leave in January.”
Romano on Torres: Spaniard would be a stunning signing for Tottenham
Right now, he has got to be a priority. Eric Dier is performing superbly in the middle of the defence and has a more than capable back-up in Joe Rodon. Cristian Romero is a superb option on the right, when fit.
He also has cover in the form of Japhet Tanganga and the in-form Davinson Sanchez. But on the left of the three, Spurs only really have Ben Davies – naturally a left-back. Davies has done well in that role, so far.
Consistently churning out decent performances, but certainly able to be improved upon. If Spurs are to pursue a centre-back in the January window, then it has got to be a left-footed one – like Torres.
