Speaking on The Cheese Room Podcast YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has been chatting about Steven Bergwijn’s future at Tottenham.
It was widely reported this month that Bergwijn could have been on his way out of north London. The winger was reportedly the subject of interest from Ajax, and Spurs were apparently open to a sale.
However, according to Romano, things may have changed this week after Bergwijn’s heroics.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time a player has completely transformed his fate under Conte. Romano states that a similar situation unfolded with Christian Eriksen this time last year with Inter.
What’s been said about Bergwijn?
Romano shared an update on the Dutchman.
“I still remember Tottenham and Leicester were interested in Eriksen. Conte was open to letting him go, and then he played in a derby game against AC Milan, he scored a free-kick and he started to be a key player. Everything changed in 24 hours. I’m sure those two goals from Bergwijn could change the situation. Tottenham were asking for €25m, Ajax submitted an offer of €15m, Tottenham said no to this proposal, and it won’t be easy for Ajax to pay €25m or for Tottenham to say yes to any proposal after that crazy game,” Romano said.

Saved his career
Bergwijn may well have saved his Tottenham career with this one performance, and hopefully, he can kick on from here.
His brace against Leicester will have earnt him a lot of credit with the fans and with the manager, and he needs to make the most of the opportunities that he’s likely to receive in the coming weeks.
Ajax may now no longer be able to get Bergwijn this month, but if the 24-year-old doesn’t kick on from here, he may well be back on the market in the summer.
