Fabrizio Romano says Juan Mata will join Turkish side Galatasaray on a free transfer in the coming hours and is on his way to Turkey to complete a move – just weeks after reports claimed he was speaking to Leeds about a move.

Mata, 34, ended a nine-year spell at Manchester United in the summer – clocking up 285 appearances in that time. He now finds himself a free agent and Leeds were said to be in talks to sign the 41-time Spain star in the last few months.

However, nothing materialised. Perhaps far-fetched to begin with, given Leeds’ transfer blueprint is to sign players younger than 25, with resale value. But Leeds have not replaced Pablo Hernandez, an elder statesman of the game.

So, a move might have been conceivable. But he remains a free agent, at least, for the next few hours. Romano says that Gala are closing in on a move for the ex-Chelsea and Valencia star – and a deal will be done today in Turkey.

Mata would have been a good signing for Leeds. Not because he improves the side. His age would certainly not allow him to partake in Jesse Marsch’s intense press. But as a substitute, and as a mentor, he would have been excellent.

Brenden Aaronson has joined the club for £25m from RedBull Salzburg. He has made a strong start, scoring against Chelsea. But he is the club’s only, real no.10. Having an experienced option might have helped Aaronson to grow.

He would have had a player he could learn from when it comes to creating opportunities. But for what Mata would have been at Leeds, his wages will have been enormous. The right decision not to sign him. Now, he joins Galatasaray.
