Fabrizio Romano has said that Newcastle United’s interest in signing James Maddison is ‘strong’ as the Magpies continued to be linked with the Leicester City and England superstar.

Speaking to CaughtOffside, the transfer guru revealed that the Foxes are yet to receive a proposal for their star midfielder. However, Newcastle are very interested in signing Maddison, with a concrete move potentially in the works in the coming weeks.

Romano said: “At the moment, Leicester have not received official proposals yet. I’m told Newcastle interest remains and it’s strong, they really like the player but there are no concrete negotiations as of now. Let’s see if he will be one for January or for June.”

With a reported price tag of £60m according to the Northern Echo, Maddison would be Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever after the arrival of Alexander Isak last summer. Yet given how good the England international has been this season, this financial outlay could be worth it in the long term.

The 26-year-old has managed seven goals and four assists in the Premier League this campaign, and with Leicester struggling to impress at all this season, Maddison swapping the East Midlands for Tyneside isn’t too far-fetched an idea.

Indeed, with Newcastle now one of the favourites to finish in the top-four, Eddie Howe’s side could be an alluring prospect for a player like Maddison, who could soon be playing UEFA Champions League football next season if the England international opts to quit Leicester for a move to St. James Park.

Maddison has been one of the best players in the Premier League for the past two seasons, and the midfielder has more than earned the right to sign for a top club in 2023, with Newcastle seemingly perfect for the 26-year-old.

After all, Newcastle could do with that extra creative spark in the midfield, and with Maddison seemingly keen on leaving Leicester, the Magpies must do all they can to sign the former Norwich City magician this month, with the funds there for a deal to be completed.
