Fabrizio Romano has reported that Liverpool are planning for life without Caoimhin Kelleher at Anfield.

The transfer insider took to Twitter to say the Reds could soon start looking for a new back-up goalkeeper.

Kelleher reportedly hopes to get more minutes as a regular starter away from Liverpool next season.

Romano also said “many clubs” are showing an interest in a loan deal for the 24-year-old.

This is subject to Liverpool giving the green light to part company with Kelleher, added the Italian.

Kelleher has been a superb deputy for first-choice Liverpool stopper Alisson Becker over the past few years.

Alisson spent some time on the sidelines in 2020, and Jurgen Klopp initially replaced the Brazilian with Adrian.

However, later on in the campaign, the Liverpool boss gave Kelleher a chance ahead of Adrian.

The Irishman subsequently cemented the second-choice spot at Anfield.

Kelleher also helped the Reds win the League Cup against Chelsea in 2022, even converting a penalty himself.

And in November last year, he broke Liverpool’s record for the goalkeeper with the most penalty shootout wins.

His shutout of Derby County in the League Cup took his tally to four.

In addition, Kelleher has saved six penalties in a shootout, the most of any Anfield keeper in history.

Our view

While it would be a shame for him to leave, it’s completely understandable.

He has made just 20 senior appearances for Liverpool. He’s good enough to become a first-choice keeper elsewhere.

Emi Martinez famously swapped Arsenal for Aston Villa a few years ago, and that wasn’t too bad a career move.

He went from second-choice at the Emirates to a World Cup and Copa America winner.

This year, Martinez may well edge Villa into the Champions League.

Kelleher is certainly talented enough to enjoy the same success with another Premier League club.
