Fabrizio Romano has reported Crystal Palace have asked Manchester United about the possibility of signing Donny van de Beek on loan in the transfer window.

Writing on Twitter, Romano claimed Palace and Valencia have asked about taking the damaged Dutchman off United’s hands for the rest of the season.

The midfielder must be chomping at the bit to break from his constraints at Old Trafford.

He’s hardly scratched the surface of competitive action this season, with a mere four starts to his name. None of them have arrived in the Premier League, a competition Van de Beek has graced for little more than an hour in total since September.

For a player who cost the Red Devils £35 million (BBC) plus add-ons, that’s a startling return. However, United fans are no longer surprised by the 24-year-old’s absence.

They have got used to seeing his name excluded from the team sheet. And, although United fans desperately want Van de Beek to succeed, few believe he will.

Great escape for Van de Beek?

For Van de Beek to salvage what is still a fledgling career, he must move from Manchester. And he needs to do it sooner rather than later as the World Cup is looming, with little time to impress his international manager.

That’s why a transfer to the capital city makes perfect sense. Especially to a club like Palace that’s heading in the right direction with Patrick Vieira at the helm.

A vibrant blend of youth and experience, the Eagles could take Van de Beek under their wing. However, Romano states United won’t accept a loan offer with an option to buy included as they want him in their squad next season.

Evidently, the hierarchy want to make good on their investment in the former Ajax man. But that simply won’t happen if he’s allowed to rot in the reserves.

United have to do the right thing and release him into Vieira’s arms.
