Speaking on the Feather on Football Podcast, Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on Arsenal’s pursuit of a new midfielder, claiming that the club believe Houssem Aouar would be perfect for them.
Aouar has been strongly linked with Arsenal for quite a while now, and Romano says the Frenchman has always been the Gunners’ number one target in that position, despite the fact they were in for Dominik Szoboszlai.
“They are still looking for this kind of player, they were also trying for Szoboszlai who then joined Leipzig, but they were trying really for Dominik Szoboszlai,” Romano said
“And also Aouar has always been the first target for Arsenal. They love him and they are convinced he would be perfect in their midfield.
“The problem is that Lyon are asking for €60 million (£53.3m) they are having an amazing season, they want to be back in the Champions League, so at the moment with the president of Lyon it’s really hard to negotiate in January for this kind of player.”

Arsenal are clearly big fans of Aouar, but it doesn’t seem as though he’ll be coming in this month.
Lyon want €60 million for their midfield maestro, and earlier this week it was reported that the Gunners only have €20 million to spend on a midfielder this month.
However, with Arsenal being such big admirers of Aouar, we shouldn’t write off the idea of the London outfit going back in for him at some point down the line.
Unfortunately though, it seems as though any move for him this month is extremely unlikely.
