Fabrizio Romano says £88m Chelsea transfer has now benefited Everton

Fabrizio Romano has said Chelsea will now no longer looking at Everton attacker Anthony Gordon after the Blues this weekend completed the signing of Mykhailo Mudryk.

Speaking to CaughtOffside, the Italian journalist revealed that the Blues are not interested in the Merseyside forward having just wrapped up a reported €100m (£88m) deal to bring Mudryk to Stamford Bridge, the biggest transfer of the January window to date.

With Chelsea heavily chasing Gordon in the summer, January felt like a time where the west London side would reignite their interest in signing the Everton star. However, the arrival of Mudryk has now put all these plans to bed, with the attacker now set to stay at Goodison Park.

Romano said: “Everton have offered Anthony Gordon a new deal, let’s see how talks will go in the next months. Chelsea have decided to invest in Mykhailo Mudryk so they’re not in talks to sign Gordon now. Tottenham monitored him in the last few months but they now feel they need different players as a priority.”

With just three goals in the Premier League this season, Gordon’s form has emulated that of his club with Everton well and truly in a relegation battle having lost to bottom-place Southampton over the weekend, leaving the Toffees in 19th position.

Indeed, with Frank Lampard yet to make any signings this month, Gordon would have been wise to jump ship amid Chelsea’s interest in the summer. However, the Blues’ move for Mudryk has now seemingly ended any hope of the 21-year-old making the move to the English capital any time soon.

Chelsea right to sign Mudryk instead of Gordon this January

Chelsea might have spent quite a hefty amount to sign Mudryk this January, but based on what Everton were asking for Gordon in the summer and the stats the England youth international has put up, it makes sense why the Blues opted to move for the 22-year-old UEFA Champions League star.

As we know, Mudryk has been one of the breakout stars in Europe this season, and for Chelsea, signing an attacker who has been there and done it on a continental stage is always a more appealing option than a player like Gordon, who has been a faint light in a dismal season for Everton.
