Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Junior Firpo plans to leave Leeds United after the Yorkshire giants were relegated from the Premier League last month.

Now, we don’t want to put words in the mouth of Leeds United supporters. But we would imagine that the reaction to Romano’s claims will be somewhere along the lines of; ‘Don’t let the door hit you on your way out’.

It’s fair to say Junior Firpo has never been a particularly popular presence among the Elland Road fanbase.

And his departure is likely to be less a case of ‘goodbye’ and more ‘good riddance’. Romano reports that a number of clubs on the continent are looking to bring an end to the former Barcelona left-back’s difficult spell in England, and it’s unlikely that Leeds will stand in his way.

Junior Firpo plans to leave Leeds United

“Understand Junior Firpo will leave Leeds United this summer,” Romano writes on Twitter. “Several European clubs are already keen on signing him. The plan is to try a new experience after relegation.”

Leeds paid around £13 million to sign Firpo from Barcelona during the summer of 2021. Like many of Victor Orta’s additions, however, the one-time Real Betis flyer flattered to deceive, his defensive deficiencies brutally exposed on countless occasions.

It’s fitting, really, that Firpo’s final Leeds start was the 2-2 draw with Newcastle in May. A game in which the former Spain U21 international both gave away a penalty and was sent off.

Fellow La Liga import Marc Roca could also leave before September 1st. There are further doubts surrounding the futures of Ilan Meslier, Jack Harrison, Tyler Adams and more, although Wilfried Gnonto – a bright spark in a dark season – does appear to be in it for the long haul.

“I never had any doubts that he would have do well abroad. First in Switzerland, and then at Leeds,” Gnonto’s agent, Claudio Vigorelli, explained a few weeks ago.

“The club is delighted with his performances. We will probably meet with the club to discuss a possible (contract) extension.

“There will be no problems.”
