Aaron Ramsdale is not in ‘talks’ with Chelsea as rumours swirl around Arsenal’s Premier League benchwarmer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Offered the opportunity to re-stake his claim for a place in Mikel Arteta’s starting XI, the England international didn’t exactly do himself any favours as Arsenal crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the London Stadium in midweek.

Ben White may have shouldered most of the blame, channelling his inner-Iain Dowie with a dreadful own goal, but Aaron Ramsdale didn’t cover himself in glory either. And while it may be a little harsh to criticise the Arsenal keeper for West Ham’s third goal of the night – Jarrod Bowen’s finish was deflected after all – but can you really imagine an Alisson Becker or a Guglielmo Vicario palming the ball helplessly into his own net?

Aaron Ramsdale tipped to swap Arsenal for Chelsea

Ramsdale’s future appears in doubt after the former Bournemouth and Sheffield United glovesman lost his place to David Raya.

But while there will be plenty of clubs keeping a close eye on his situation, Romano believes that rumours linking Ramsdale with a move eight miles south are wide of the mark.

“Understand Aaron Ramsdale is currently not part of Chelsea list as new goalkeeper,” Romano writes on Twitter. “No negotiations are taking place now.

“Chelsea are still quiet on the goalkeeper position as no talks are ongoing about that for January window.”

Raya, it must be said, has hardly been faultless since replacing Ramsdale in Arteta’s XI. But as long as the Spaniard remains Arsenal’s first-choice, Ramsdale’s future will be a topic of much discussion. TalkSPORT believe that Newcastle United is one potential destination.

‘Needs to go somewhere else’

“I think this smells and feels like Ramsdale needs to go somewhere else,” former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan tells talkSPORT. “If he is going to progress in his career.

“It doesn’t quite have the connotations of Joe Hart (bombed out of Manchester City by Pep Guardiola in 2016). But it has the whiff of it, in terms of he was in and around being the England goalkeeper at the time, he was doing very little wrong, even though I didn’t think he was a great goalkeeper.”
