Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has reported that while Tottenham harbour a strong relationship with the representatives of Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, a January swoop seems unlikely.
Antonio Conte reportedly wanted to sign Hincapie himself, according to a report by Calciomercato.
Recently, the Italian outlet also claimed that Leverkusen were ready to sell the 20-year-old, who impressed for Ecuador at the World cUP for a fee in the range of between £21.5 and £26 million.
This seemed like a positive update for Tottenham, who were prepared to pay £34 million to sign the highly-rated centre-back in the summer, as per Kicker.
As revealed by Fabrizio Romano on the Last Word on Spurs YouTube channel, one out of the two biggest priorities for the club in January was to bring in a brand-new left-footed central defender.
While Ben Davies has impressed as the left-sided centre-back in Antonio Conte’s back three, he remains upgradable.
In the case of Clement Lenglet, he is yet to make the impact expected by many once he joined Tottenham on loan.
Now, a fresh update details whether the club’s long-time target will put pen on paper at the turn of the year.
Fabrizio Romano says Piero Hincapie to Tottenham is unlikely

Fabrizio Romano has stated that while Tottenham have a strong relationship with those who represent Piero Hincapie, Bayer Leverkusen are unlikely to sell him in January.
“[Piero] Hincapie is appreciated [by Tottenham], it’s true. Bayer Leverkusen want to keep all their players until the end of the season and then sell in the summer.”
“This is why it’s not going to be easy to negotiate and [it] has to be an important proposal.”
“I’m told that Tottenham have a very good relationship with the agents of the player, of people representing the player”, he said on the Last Word on Spurs YouTube channel.
Ultimately, the update provided by Fabrizio Romano regarding Piero Hincapie should not be interlinked with Tottenham now holding back on signing a new centre-back in January.
