Tottenham Hotspur showed a ‘secret’ interest in signing Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini during the summer transfer window.

Atalanta talent Giorgio Scalvini was one of the players Tottenham Hotspur considered signing over the summer.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who has been speaking about Scalvini on Kick.

Tottenham needed to invest in at least one new defender over the summer and did so with a deal for Micky van de Ven.

Spurs spent £34.5million rising to £43million on Van de Ven, limiting the budget Tottenham could use on other defenders.

Tottenham wanted Giorgio Scalvini

Tottenham are expected to be in the market for another defender come January with homegrown options like Trevoh Chalobah, Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo in the mix.

Spurs do also like an option abroad though having shown an interest in Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who claims that Scalvini was a ‘secret’ target for Tottenham over the summer.

Romano claims that Scalvini is ‘very talented’ and ‘very, very good’ even if he isn’t a household name around Europe yet.

Tottenham were keen on Scalvini before learning Atalanta’s ‘crazy’ demands for the defender, instead deciding to go for Van de Ven.

“He’s a very talented player, we know him very well in Italy, he’s probably less known around Europe but this boy is very, very good,” said Romano.

“He’s still very young and playing at a top level with Atalanta for a long time, he’s on the radar of many clubs. For example, from what I heard, Tottenham last summer were considering a move for Giorgio Scalvini. He was one of the players, the secret players, they had in the list at Tottenham, then they decided to go for something different – also because Atalanta were asking for crazy money for Scalvini,” he added.

Who is Atalanta talent Giorgio Scalvini?

The 19-year-old hails from Chiari in the Lombardy region of Italy and started out with nearby AC Palazzolo.

Scalvini has stayed around the Lombardy region throughout, joining Brescia before then moving down the road to Atalanta in Bergamo.

Scalvini has been in the Atalanta ranks for eight years now and has emerged into a first-team star, turning out more than 60 times.

The 6ft 4in defender can also play in midfield and has already picked up seven caps for the Italian national team.

Scalvini won the Best Italian Under-21 Player at the Golden Boy Awards last week and even if it’s not Tottenham who pounce, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him in the Premier League one day.
