Well, Steven Gerrard has officially joined Aston Villa from Rangers.

The 41-year-old has been named as Dean Smith’s successor at Villa Park.

Rangers fans will be livid because that’s only because Gerrard really looked to be building something special at Ibrox.

He joined the Gers in 2018 and won a first Scottish Premiership title for a decade last season, underlining his importance in Glasgow.

Aston Villa are getting one hell of a new head coach.

And Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that he’ll also have a big say in transfers.

Exciting

This is exciting for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, there was – and still is – a big question mark over how Aston Villa spent their millions last summer under Smith et al.

Having lost their last five Premier League games, did the Villans spend the £100 million Jack Grealish fee wisely? It’s certainly debateable.

And having new blood with regards to recruitment can only be a big positive.

But it’s also exciting because Gerrard had control over signings at Rangers as well, along with Ross Wilson.

And the former Liverpool midfielder did spend very well indeed.

With the squad Celtic had, becoming top dogs in Scotland was by no means easy, but so much of the Gers’ success was down to solid recruitment.

And the fact that he’s going to be involved in who Aston Villa will be signing is undeniably a major positive.
