Fabrizio Romano has told Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE YouTube channel that Arsenal could be preparing for an exciting summer window, if they finish in fourth place. They are holding off on entering talks, just in case.

Tottenham have overtaken Arsenal into the last Champions League spot after a 5-1 win over Newcastle – with Arsenal losing to Crystal Palace. But the Gunners have a game in hand with the two sides on level points.

Arsenal are likely to be busy in the summer, with a striker expected given Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are out of contract in June. The Gunners tried to sign a midfielder in January, and that will also be a target.

Speaking to Ferdinand’s YouTube channel on Thursday, Italian journalist Romano was asked who will have the most-interesting summer and reacted with Arsenal. But says it hinges on whether they qualify for fourth.

“The most difficult club to track with transfers is Arsenal because they depend on Champions League football. They are waiting before jumping into concrete negotiations,” Romano told Ferdinand’s channel.

“I’m really curious to see this transfer window for Arsenal. This summer, if they will get Champions League football, it will be time for the next step, in attacking positions and even a new midfielder. This is why I say Arsenal.”

Romano on Arsenal summer: Could Gunners spend big?

It is likely they spend some cash even if they only finish fifth. A new striker, one to lead the line that meets Arsenal’s transfer blueprint – experienced, but in the age range of 20 and 25 – will cost a whole lot of cash.

Darwin Nunez, for example, is rated by Benfica at a fee of £65million. A midfielder might cost slightly less. The Gunners are also likely to sell a few players, Granit Xhaka and those out on loan – Lucas Torreira being one.
