This rumour about Arsenal signing Houssem Aouar is fascinating.

It was reported earlier in August that the Gunners were keen on signing the Lyon midfielder [L’Equipe].

Aouar’s stock is rising in European football after helping the Ligue 1 outfit to a Champions League semi-final this past season, with the French side eliminating Manchester City.

Reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed on a podcast this week that Arsenal’s hierarchy were madly in love with the 22-year-old.

And Romano has today tweeted that Aouar has his heart set on a move to the Premier League.

This doesn’t automatically mean that he’s bound for the Emirates Stadium, but Mikel Arteta’s side are linked heavier than any other English club and therefore it could be very good news for Arsenal, especially since L’Equipe claimed they were winning the race.

That being said, Romano added that nobody has met his £54 million valuation and it remains to be seen whether the North Londoners can scrape that sort of money together.

With links to £45 million-rated Thomas Partey still doing the rounds, and Dani Ceballos, there’s just no way Arteta will be signing all three.

Arsenal might love Aouar, and Aouar might love the idea of playing on these shores, but there’s still a huge question of whether it could work financially and there could and should be big doubt on this front.
