Fabrizio Romano has told CBS Soccer’s Que Golazo podcast that Leeds United are closer to the signing of Brenden Aaronson from RedBull Salzburg – thanks to the appointment of Jesse Marsch as the club’s boss.
Marsch, 48, was confirmed on Monday evening as the new Leeds manager. He replaces Marcelo Bielsa, who spent almost four years and over 150 games in the role. Marsch has signed a contract until the summer of 2025.
The ex-Leipzig and New York Red Bulls manager is expected to play in a similar way to Bielsa – boasting an emphasis on attacking football, with a high press. But he will be more zonal, than Bielsa’s man-marking system.
At Salzburg, Marsch signed Aaronson from MLS side Philadelphia Union and the midfielder has since gone on to shine in the Champions League. Leeds, of course, tried to sign him in January – but were told no.
Numerous moves fell flat on their face because Salzburg wanted to keep Aaronson until the summer – so he could play against Bayern in their first-ever knockout round. Marsch edges Leeds closer, according to Romano.
“My answer is yes, because the relationship is great,” Romano said, when asked if the arrival of Marsch edges Leeds closer. “Let me say, and it’s good news for Leeds fans, many players speak very highly of Jesse Marsch.
“They wanted him in January with Marcelo Bielsa. And I’m sure they still want him and they will try for him in the summer. A lot of it will depend on whether Leeds stay in the Premier League or not.”
Romano on Marsch: Leeds could finally get ideal signing in Aaronson
When a club changes manager, normally it completely changes the type of player targeted. But with Bielsa being replaced by Marsch, Leeds are simply passing the torch onto a new gaffer that is heading in the same direction.
Under Marsch, Aaronson would hit the ground running. He would know what to expect, he would know what kind of tactics were required, what to do and what not to do. A match made in heaven, at Elland Road.
