Journalist Fabrizio Romano has stated that Borussia Dortmund are in a strong position to sign Youssoufa Moukoko down to a new contract despite interest from the likes of Newcastle United.

Speaking to CaughtOffside, the Italian reporter revealed that Dortmund have made a new proposal for Moukoko that could now see the youngster sign a new contract with the German giants, with the update coming amid strong interest from European clubs in the teenage attacker.

Romano said: “The new proposal is very good and I still think Borussia Dortmund have a good chance to extend his contract. BVB are optimistic, Moukoko will decide soon. He’s an exciting talent, so of course many European clubs have been following the situation, including Barcelona and Newcastle, but Borussia have made their bid.”

As per the Evening Standard, Newcastle had made a contract offer to sign Moukoko for free at the end of the season worth £150,000-a-week. However, the striker now looks set to remain in Germany with Dortmund following these latest comments from Romano.

Regarded by many as one of the best talents in Europe, Moukoko has broken numerous records with Dortmund since making his debut with the club mere days after his 16th birthday, with the forward also a part of Germany’s 2022 FIFA World Cup squad last year.

Indeed, Newcastle signing Moukoko would have been a huge sign of intent from the Magpies. However, with Dortmund now ramping up their efforts to keep the teenager in Germany, the Bundesliga side now look set to keep the wonderkid around for that bit longer with a new contract.

Moukoko has all the makings of being one of the best players in world football. However, despite all the talent, the youngster is still raw and in need of consistent game time at a club that knows how to develop players, which is exactly what Dortmund do best.

Whilst Newcastle signing Moukoko would have been an exciting transfer, there’s no denying that what the forward needs now and for the next few seasons is regular minutes and a stable environment, with the former something Newcastle simply won’t offer given their current attacking options.
