Fabrizio Romano has stated that Wolves will today sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes, with Liverpool missing out on the Portuguese superstar to their Premier League rivals.
The Italian journalist took to Twitter to confirm that the 23-year-old will today sign for Wolves in one of the most surprising deals of the summer, with Liverpool reportedly interested in Nunes, who is set to join Bruno Lage’s side for a reported €50m (£43m), a club-record fee for the Molineux side.
Liverpool had been linked with Nunes for the past few weeks, with Jurgen Klopp reportedly weighing up the possibility of signing the midfielder following another injury to Thiago Alcantara, who is expected to miss a month of football, yet Wolves have now beaten the Reds to the Sporting star.
One of the best players coming out of Portugal and a talent who is ready for the leap to the Premier League, Wolves have potentially landed a superstar in Nunes, with the Brazilian-born midfielder regarded by many as one of Sporting’s best players last season.
With numerous Premier League sides joining Liverpool and Wolves in the race to sign the 23-year-old, Lage has done well to beat some top sides to the midfielder’s signature, and for the Anfield side, they could regret not pushing hard enough to land the Portuguese international this summer.
Indeed, Liverpool’s injury problems in midfield could lead to Klopp making a signing late in the window, yet with Nunes now off the market, an alternative as good as the soon-to-be Wolves star will be challenging to find, especially with so little time to assess options.
Wolves have beaten Liverpool to a potential signing of the summer

Wolves’ Portuguese signings have helped the West Midlands side to establish themselves as one of the Premier Leauge’s most effectively run clubs, and the newest arrival of Nunes could be one of the moves of the summer if the former Liverpool target adapts to life in England quickly enough.
After all, Nunes is a player many top side wanted this summer, and with Wolves beating them all to the punch, the 23-year-old could now help the Molineux side to a memorable season in the Premier League, with Liverpool left kicking themselves for not moving fast enough to sign the midfielder.
