Speculation is rife that Liverpool want to sign Raphael Varane this summer.

It’s no secret that the Reds have had pretty rotten luck on the injury front this season – particularly involving central defenders – and according to Diario Madridista, the Real Madrid powerhouse is on Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards’s radar.

AS added last weekend that the Spanish giants will be open to selling Varane during the next transfer window due to the fact that his contract expires in 2022, meaning he could leave the Bernabeu for nothing in 18 months should they fail to agree an extension.

And Fabrizio Romano has some encouraging news for Liverpool in this regard.

The Italian journalist revealed to his Here We Go podcast on Wednesday that Varane is represented by a management company with close ties to the Premier League.

He said: “Keep an eye on this situation. Varane is now represented by one of the best agencies in the world – CAA base – and they are so strong in the Premier League. That’s why we have to keep an eye on Varane. The situation with Real Madrid is not easy. There is no agreement at the moment, nothing advanced [regarding contract].”

This bodes pretty well for Liverpool you would imagine because if the reigning Premier League champions are genuinely interested then it could and probably will help their cause if there’s already a positive relations between the relevant parties.

Of course, that isn’t to say that the same doesn’t apply to Manchester United – who have also been linked to the France international – but it could come down to who’s more desperate to get him.

And when you consider what a shortage of centre-back options has cost Klopp’s side this season, they might well make him their number one priority.
