Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori has found himself a wanted man in recent weeks, but the race for his signature looks to be coming to an end.

The 23-year-old centre back thrived under Frank Lampard last season, having shown his quality during a loan spell with Lampard at Derby County.

However, Thiago Silva’s arrival last summer means that Tomori has slipped to fifth in Chelsea’s centre back pecking order, behind Silva, Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

Tomori has subsequently slipped completely out of contention for a spot in the England squad this summer, and teams have been queueing up to take him on loan.

The Guardian reported just a few days ago that Leeds United and Newcastle United are both keen to sign Tomori with the idea of giving him first-team football in a loan spell.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has tweeted that Tomori will instead be joining AC Milan on loan, with an option to buy for €30million (£27million) at the end of the season.

That’s quite the move for Tomori, who will now be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta and even Silva himself in becoming a defensive star at Milan.

Leeds and Newcastle now have to look elsewhere for a new centre back, with just over two weeks of the January transfer window left to go.
