Fabrizio Romano has explained why Marcelo Gallardo didn’t replace José Mourinho at Tottenham, despite being on Daniel Levy’s list.
What’s the story?
Well, a number of fans took to Twitter yesterday to demand that Levy hires Gallardo, who is currently in charge of River Plate.
The Argentine is clearly a popular man in N17.
So, why didn’t he get the Spurs job?
Speaking on Twitch during a Q&A session, Romano said: “Marcelo Gallardo was on Tottenham’s list. They were talking with people close to the Argentinian manager, but he wanted to stay at River Plate, it was not the right moment.”
You can’t argue with that – if Gallardo decided to see out the season and bear the fruits of his hard work, there’s no blaming him.
Interestingly, River Plate’s season will not end when Tottenham’s does.
The Argentine Primera División begins in July, and ends in the middle of December.
Could we see Marcelo Gallardo at Tottenham this season?

Seeing as Gallardo’s season ends in December, there’s a chance he could leave the Argentinian giants once his work for the campaign is done.
If Nuno Espirito Santo is still struggling in December, Levy could potentially turn to the 45-year-old again.
Gallardo has been likened to Mauricio Pochettino, and is famed for his attacking football in Argentina which has yielded 696 goals in 386 games.
When hosting a Q&A session with Tottenham fans, Football London‘s Alasdair Gold wrote: “Gallardo is certainly growing his reputation and some people believe he’s similar to Pochettino in style.”

This style also seen him win 12 trophies with River Plate.
In our view, Gallardo has the makings of a successful Premier League coach, and really does give off strong Pochettino vibes.
If he ends up on these shores, we believe he’d be a huge success.
