Fabrizio Romano has told written in his Anfield Watch column that a decision on Liverpool star James Milner’s future is ‘expected soon’. Talks are ongoing for the midfielder, who could sign a deal until June 2023.
Milner, 36, remains a crucial part of Liverpool’s side – making his 28th appearance of the season for the Reds in the FA Cup against Norwich City at Anfield on Wednesday night. He is a leader among the Liverpool players.
His contract, believed to be worth a whopping £140,000 a week (Spotrac), is set to expire on June 30 and there had been talk that this might be his final season at Anfield, under Jurgen Klopp. But he could now be set to remain.
Indeed, Romano reports a decision is expected soon for the ex-Leeds, Manchester City, Newcastle and Aston Villa star. The decision will come from Milner’s side, with Liverpool ready to give him a deal until 2023.
“The final decision for Milner’s contract is expected soon. Milner is considered a leader in the locker room and a player able to formidably deputise across a range of positions,” Romano reported this week.
“The board has prepared a contract until June 2023, but it is understood Milner’s final decision will be dependent on other proposals he may receive for one of the last chapters of his excellent career.”
New Milner deal: Why he may decide against Liverpool contract
Milner is now fourth in the all-time Premier League appearance record holders – overtaking ex-Liverpool goalkeeper David James earlier this season. He sits behind Frank Lampard, Ryan Giggs and Gareth Barry.
With just 73 separating him and first-placed Barry, Milner will be keen to see his career out in the Premier League. This season, he has played 17 times in the league. But he will want assurances he is still a key part.
Otherwise, it is a waste of a season in his bid to overtake Barry. He might be better off joining a lower Premier League side, such as his boyhood club Leeds, where he might be more important to the starting line-up.
