Well, Kylian Mbappe has been linked with a move to Liverpool…….again.
This is one that crops up every now and again and this time, it has been reported by ESPN that the Paris Saint-Germain megastar would be interested in signing for the Reds.
According to Le Parisien, the 22-year-old is also ‘convinced’ that he’d be successful and fulfilled by playing under Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
This is all good and well, but there’s no getting away from the finances.
And the truth is that if the Premier League champions spent the whole of last summer bartering with Bayern Munich over a £20 million deal for Thiago Alcantara, then spending 10 times that amount – including transfer fee and salary – is clearly going to be a much more complicated issue.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed to Anfield Watch that if not for the mid-pandemic financial landscape of European football, Mbappe to Merseyside would’ve been a legitimate story, but the Italian journalist has suggested that the numbers make it impossible for the foreseeable future.
He said: “If we were back in a normal situation, for sure, we can start talking about Liverpool and Real Madrid making moves for Kylian Mbappe if he won’t extend his contract with PSG.
“[Liverpool would be] spending, in my opinion, more than €150 million [to purchase Mbappe from PSG] and paying an enormous salary to Mbappe. The salary would be I would think around €20 million after taxes per season for Kylian Mbappe.”
Liverpool definitely need to freshen up their attacking options.
Yes, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane were both on target in the win over Spurs last night, while Mo Salah also had a goal chalked off.
But these three simply haven’t been playing all that well over the past four or five weeks and a good performance in North London shouldn’t detract from the fact that Klopp needs to tweak that trident in the summer.
