According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are now prioritising a move for Martin Ødegaard, and are waiting for Real Madrid’s decision.

What’s the story?

Well, it sounds as if Ødegaard is Arsenal’s No.1 target with just weeks remaining of the transfer window.

Romano claims that Arsenal are ready to submit a bid if Carlo Ancelotti decides that the 22-year-old isn’t in his plans for this season.

The Gunners are more keen to sign the Norway captain than they are to capture James Maddison.

Romano adds that Joe Willock’s move to Newcastle will be completed soon.

It’s good to see that Arsenal have identified a No.1 target, although it’s somewhat frustrating that they must wait for Real Madrid’s decision.

Some Arsenal fans may argue that it’s underwhelming to see Ødegaard outlined as the club’s No.1 target after his loan spell last season.

The 30-cap Norway international scored just twice in 20 appearances for the Gunners last term, while only providing two assists.

That isn’t great, but context is needed.

Ødegaard is a 22-year-old who had never played in England before, and he was coming into an out-of-form side without any rhythm behind him.

Now, after a six-month spell to familiarise himself with Arsenal, there’s plenty to suggest that he could explode into life should he return.

Ødegaard has the potential to become one of the best playmakers on the planet, so if the £38,000-a-week man is available, Arsenal must pounce.

Judging by Romano’s tweet, Edu and Mikel Arteta seem ready to do just that if Real Madrid decide to make him surplus to requirements.
