Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers are attempting to bring in Russell Martin.

Fabio Cardoso of Rangers gestures during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers FC and Celtic FC at Ibrox Stadium on September 23, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Fabio Cardoso has told the Daily Record how he wants to stay at Glasgow Rangers, but he may be better off leaving, with Graeme Murty’s transfer plans becoming clearer.

BBC Sport have suggested that Rangers are close to bringing Russell Martin to Ibrox, and that should limit Cardoso’s chances even further.

Martin’s arrival at Rangers would bolster Graeme Murty’s defensive options, and Cardoso may not be making a wise choice by sticking around.

“I’m still a young player. I’m learning and have to be patient,” he said.

“I don’t want to give up. I could try to find another team but playing for Rangers is going to help me a lot in my career.

“I’m learning a lot even when I’m not playing. This is the right place to develop as a footballer, as a person and to be successful.”

The problem for Cardoso is that Murty seems to be wanting to put together a British core to his squad, with many of Pedro Caixinha’s summer additions being offloaded.

Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha is seen prior to the Betfred League Cup Quarter Final at Firhill Stadium on September 19, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Cardoso has played in just one of Rangers’ last 13 league matches, and his chances of breaking back into the squad only look set to become more slim.

If Martin arrives, the Scottish international is likely to go straight into the Light Blues’ starting line-up.

And, although Cardoso may not want to give up on his time at Ibrox, Martin’s arrival should be a sign to the 23-year-old that reluctantly heading for the exit door is his best option.
