Andre Villas-Boas is on the brink- could the former England manager be the one to bring success to Stamford Bridge?
When you think about it, this may just be the perfect coalition.
Fabio Capello has a point to prove to English supporters, and Stamford Bridge could be the place to do it.
While the Italian’s record as an international manager will remain mediocre, his honours sheet as a club manager takes quite some reading.
He won both the league and Champions League with AC Milan, the league at Real Madrid, Roma, and Juventus- even though the Turin club were later stripped of their titles.
His next move will clearly be back into club football, and there will be no shortage of offers for the man who seems to be a guaranteed winner at this level.
Inter Milan were once heavily linked, and suffered a bad defeat on Sunday and may be tempted to axe Claudio Ranieri while Capello is available, and Russian club Anzhi Machachkala are also hoping to open talks.
But surely the chance to stay in London and right a wrong would be tempting for the Italian?
He would be reunited with the key protagonist in his resignation, John Terry, a man he clearly believes in.
He would be good for the club, and would not tolerate egos in the dressing room.
It is likely that he would purge the squad of ageing and underperforming stars, as shown by the ruthless way he told David Beckham his time at Real Madrid was up.
His record for England indicates he would give the club’s youngsters a chance, great news for the talented Josh McEachran, Ryan Bertrand and Romelu Lukaku.
Of course Andre Villas-Boas has not left the Bridge yet, but he is currently dicing with professional execution, with Chelsea struggling to secure a Champions League berth for next season.
It may be that Capello will run a mile, and the last person he wants to manage again is John Terry, but Chelsea would be foolish not to enquire about the Italian’s services.
How would Chelsea fans feel about Capello’s appointment?
