Fabio Borini will end his association with Sunderland by signing a three year deal with AC Milan.
Sunderland’s attempts to fund their League One rebuild have been boosted with news that Fabio Borini is poised to make a permanent move to AC Milan.
Borini, who cost the Black Cats a reported £10m from Liverpool in 2015, joined the Rossoneri on a season-long loan last summer, a deal that included the option to buy. The former Chelsea starlet proved to be a versatile option under Vincenzo Montella and his successor Gennaro Gattuso, filling in across a variety of positions under both coaches.
Given Sunderland’s desperation to clear their bloated wage bill, a return to Wearside was never a real possibility with Borini’s agent Roberto De Fanti confirming his client has signed a three-year deal at the San Siro.
“From the first July Borini will be a player owned by Milan,” De Fanti told Calciomercato.com.
“His contract will be until 2021.”
Major changes are underway at the Stadium of Light following the club’s second consecutive relegation to the third tier of English football. Following Chris Coleman’s departure, Colorado Rapids coach Anthony Hudson and Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder have emerged as favourites to fill the void once Stewart Donald’s takeover is ratified by the EFL.
Clearing the club’s sizeable wage bill and generating any funds from sales will be vital to the project awaiting whoever takes the reins.
