Will Fabio Borini’s transfer to Liverpool prove to be one of the best pieces of business of the summer?
Having been appointed Liverpool manager just over a month ago, Brendan Rodgers hasn’t used a single moment of his time unproductively.
Already, players seem delighted with the new variation of his coaching methods, others from the youth setup – namely, Raheem Sterling and Suso – are being handed a chance to impress with the first team.
Now he has completed the first signing of his era with the capture of Italian starlet, Fabio Borini.
Having narrowly missed out on Sigurdsson, the transfer will be a major coup for the Merseysiders in their efforts to regain an elusive Champion’s League spot.
A fee of around £10 million (€13 million) proved enough to push forward brisk negotiations before passing a medical at Melwood.
The 21-year-old caps off a meteoric rise that has seen him complete successful terms with Swansea (where he formerly worked under Rodgers), Parma and, finally, Roma where he scored 9 goals in 24 matches in the prior season.
His displays even merited a call-up to the full Italian squad for the Euro Championships.
Having worked with Borini on several occasions, Rodgers has identified the former Chelsea youth as an ideal forward. Notably, he has the ability to play anywhere across a front three which would suit Rodgers’ plans for the implementation of a new 4-3-3 formation.
However, the acquisition casts more doubt over the future of Andy Carroll who has been strongly linked with a move away from Anfield this week.
Speaking on the club’s official website, Rodgers boasted “he’s a big talent, he scores goals, and his passion, focus and concentration is a very important part of his game – and a big part of what you want from a player.”
Judging by such comments, Borini could represent a shrewd piece of business as the transfer window promises to be a busy one.
It is unlikely to be the only piece of business Liverpool do this summer, but it could be the most important, and sends a signal as to the manager’s intentions.
