Fabian Schar has told The Chronicle that he cannot wait to play in front of the “crazy” Newcastle United fans.

The 26-year-old joined Newcastle on Thursday after Rafael Benitez activated the Switzerland international’s £3 million release clause at relegated Deportivo la Coruna.

By virtue of the fact that he has 42 caps for his country, that might just be considered a bargain in the modern-day climate of outrageous transfer fees.

Newcastle boast some of the most popular and noisiest fans in the Premier League, and Schar revealed to The Chronicle that he is relishing the opportunity of playing at St James’s Park.

“I am really looking forward to seeing the fans and the stadium. I am looking forward to starting to train with the team.

“I have played at St James’ Park before in the Olympics and it was brilliant so to know it’s the home stadium is brilliant.

“The fans are crazy here so I really look forward to playing in front of them.”

Florian Lejeune suffered a knee injury in the pre-season clash with Hull City in midweek, meaning that the new addition might partner Jamaal Lascelles straight away if the Frenchman – who missed much of last season with an ankle problem – is ruled out for a lengthy period of time.

Benitez also has Ciaran Clark to call upon as a partner for Lascelles but ideally the former Basel stalwart will take to the Premier League like a duck to water, if Lejeune is ruled out for a while.

United host Spurs at St James’s Park on August 11 for their curtain raiser.
