Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar featured against Watford on Saturday.
Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar has told the Shields Gazette that his start to life at the club has been ‘difficult’.
The Magpies beat Watford 1-0 on Saturday afternoon to claim their first win of the season, handing a major boost to manager Rafael Benitez.
Many Newcastle fans will have been fearing the worst when captain Jamaal Lascelles was substituted through injury at half time, but Schar stepped up to the mark.
The Swiss international was a bargain signing over the summer as Newcastle activated a release clause in his contract following Deportivo La Coruna’s relegation, and he was making just a second Premier League appearance.
Schar has struggled for playing time with Newcastle, as Lascelles and Federico Fernandez have emerged as Benitez’s first choice, but he was ready when Lascelles went down with injury.
Now, Schar has told the Shields Gazette that he has been having a ‘difficult’ time at Newcastle, as he hasn’t been given a chance to help the team, leaving him unhappy at a lack of opportunities.
Schar added that he wants to impress in training and hopes that he can now play more regularly for Newcastle, having shown real promise in helping the side keep a clean sheet against Watford.
“It’s difficult,” said Schar. “Every player wants to play. It’s normal. You have a lot of players in the team. It’s normal sometimes that you have difficult times. For me, the last months were difficult. I came here new trying to help the team. I couldn’t help the team. Now I’m hoping there will come some better times for the team and also me.”
“I’m trying to do my best, like I do in training. I’m trying to show my qualities all the time in training. It’s nice when you get three points. “Now we keep going. It’s only one win, but we now have more confidence,” he added,
