Idrissa Gueye is heavily linked with a departure from Everton.
Fabian Delph has rubbished suggestions that he was signed to be Idrissa Gueye’s replacement at Everton.
The Toffees made Delph their third summer signing last week after bringing the former Manchester City midfielder in on an £8.5 million deal [The Mirror].
There was speculation that the 29-year-old could have been signed as a replacement for the Senegal star, who has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain [The Telegraph].
But Delph insists that he isn’t at Goodison to replace Gueye and hopes to still have him as a team-mate beyond this summer.
He told The Echo when asked if he was replacing the 29-year-old: “No, I’ve only been here a week.
“I’m trying to get up to speed with the lads. The training is different to my last club. The work rate is really up there. I’m impressed with that. Hopefully Idrissa stays. He’s a great player and a great asset to the club. I’ll play anywhere.”
With respect to Delph, losing Gueye would be a step backwards for Everton.
There’s a reason why the big-spending French giants want him in Paris and it’s because Gueye is a brilliant midfielder, one who was excellent under Marco Silva last season.
The Merseyside outfit have had a decent window so far, with Delph and Andre Gomes being the outfield additions made by Marcel Brands, but losing the former Aston Villa ace would certainly put a downer on things.
