It wasn’t just Fabian Delph’s decision to quit Aston Villa for Manchester City which hurt supporters, but the way he did it.
Delph’s choice came just days after he had pledged his future to Villa.
While it all seems like ancient history now, Delph has decided to revisit old wounds.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Delph addressed his move to quit Villa and this thought process at the time.
He said: “When I was at Villa and I was captain there and I had the opportunity to go to City, it played on my mind I wouldn’t be as pivotal.
“So initially I didn’t want to go, but a lot of things happened behind the scenes and I realised I had to go.”
Delph’s concerns at Villa were not unfounded. His departure preceded a disastrous season in which the club were relegated and won just three matches. At the same time his move to quit did not help.
He has been successful at Manchester City, winning seven trophies. This season though he played only 11 Premier League games from a possibly 38, with only eight starts.
Villa were finally promoted last week and next season Delph will have the chance to face his former club. Whether he will be selected, is another matter.
