Fabregas vs Iniesta – Who was more effective this week?

We compare the performances of Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas and Barcelona’s Andreas Iniesta during their club’s Champions League matches in midweek.

Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas has already showed Barcelona that they let a top quality player go in the summer during his time at Stamford Bridge so far, but how did he compare to their very own creative fulcrum in the Champions League on Tuesday night?

Fabregas played for Chelsea as they took on Sporting Lisbon, whilst Andreas Iniesta featured for Barcelona in their game against Paris Saint Germain.

In the matches, it was Fabregas who ended up on the winning side as the Blues picked up a 1-0 victory over their Portuguese opponents, whilst Iniesta’s Barca struggled against a star-studded PSG line-up.

However, performance wise, it was Iniesta who came out on top and that is perhaps an indication of why Fabregas just didn’t work out as a success in Catalonia.

Most expected the Spaniard to fit in at the Nou Camp with consummate ease when he arrived there three years ago, but he never sustained a first-team place and was relinquished this summer after failing to impress.

At Chelsea he has been a revelation so far, and is a major reason why the Blues have had such a successful start to the season, but he came up short against his former teammate here.

Not only did Iniesta offer more in an attacking sense, but the 30-year-old also was more accurate was his passing and was dispossessed fewer times.

This, in itself, is the perfect example of the standards Barcelona demand given the precedence they put on passing football, and, whilst Fabregas is a worthy creative fulcrum in the Premier League, he was not be in Iniesta’s class in midweek.
