Leeds United’s Ezgjan Alioski has echoed what his team-mates should be thinking.
Ezgjan Alioski has suggested to LUTV that he and his Leeds United team-mates aren’t getting carried away by their form just yet.
High-flying Leeds thumped Norwich City 3-0 at Carrow Road on Saturday to leapfrog Middlesbrough and move top of the Championship on goal difference.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side have won 13 points from a possible 15 this season and it’s growing increasingly difficult not to fancy the Whites as strong promotion contenders.
That being said, United, then under Thomas Christiansen, were also top of the table in September last year, but Leeds wound up finishing 13th under Paul Heckingbottom after Christiansen was sacked in February.
On Friday, the Whites host second-placed Boro at Elland Road in the biggest Championship game of the season so far, but Alioski has thrown out a reminder that it’s still far too early in the season for this clash to be of any huge significance.
“We are top of the league, but last year we also had a good start,” Alioski, a £3.2 million signing from Lugano last summer [Football League Paper], told LUTV.
“It’s really early to speak but we enjoyed this win and Friday’s the new challenge.”
Leeds players should listen to Alioski and one would hope that Bielsa is conveying a similar message to the team on a regular basis.
It seems like it for now, but winning promotion to the Premier League isn’t going to be a walk in the park. There will be many ups and downs from now until May and how the West Yorkshire side handle the negative points might well determine whether they’re made of the right stuff.
Friday is a huge test and should act as a better barometer in gauging how good Leeds really are, but win or lose, it will decide nothing and either way Bielsa’s troops must remain grounded after the implosion of last season.
